Join the DAISY Consortium

The DAISY Consortium exists because of its members and their contributions.

 

Benefits of Membership

Organisations, companies and individuals enjoy many benefits through association with the DAISY Consortium, including:

  • leadership in the worldwide DAISY movement to create a world where people with print disabilities have equal access to information and knowledge, without delay or additional expense
  • identification of as a supporter of collaborative, international efforts to standardize access to information for all
  • influence in the ongoing development of the DAISY Standard and DAISY open source tools

How to Apply

  1. Applicants need to review and comply with the DAISY Consortium Articles of Association (for Members) or the DAISY Consortium Regulations for Friends (for Friends).
  2. Complete and submit the online membership form, or download a printable application to apply by mail (with the exception of the application for Full Membership).

    Note: Organisations wishing to become a Full Member are kindly requested to contact the President or the Secretary General of the DAISY Consortium by using the Contact Us form, select the Membership category.

  3. Once the application form has been reviewed, we will send an e-mail confirmation and issue an invoice for the membership fee.
  4. Membership comes into effect upon receipt of payment. The President and the Secretary General of the DAISY Consortium will send information on how to fully participate in the DAISY Consortium's activities.

Membership Levels


Full Membership

Full Members are non-profit organisations that produce and/or distribute accessible (multi)media for people with print disabilities. 

Full membership may be shared among two or more organisations.  Several organisations which represent a geographical region or language group may collaborate, combining their resources to become a Full Member. These organisations act and speak with one voice within the DAISY Consortium.

Who should join DAISY as a Full Member:

  • organisations with the desire and resources to steer the development and implementation of the DAISY Standard
  • organisations dedicated to furthering the worldwide DAISY movement toward accessible information for all
  • large libraries serving many people with print disabilities
  • organisations interested in developing new technologies
  • large organisations active in the field of education and of producing accessible (learning) media/materials for all groups of disability

Fees for Full Membership

  • Annual fee: USD 26,250
  • When joining in the second half of a year: 50% of the fee (USD 13,125)
  • Initial joining fee: USD 30,000. Previously paid membership fees (for instance for Associate Members upgrading their membership) will be subtracted from this initial joining fee.

Note: Full Memberships become effective on January 1st or July 1st of a calendar year. The admission of Full Members will be decided by resolution of the General Meeting by open ballot; see the DAISY Consortium Articles of Association for details.

2009 Membership Fee Change: at the 2008 DAISY Annual General Meeting a fee increase of 5% was proposed and the resolution was adopted. The DAISY Full Member annual fee will be USD 27,565 in 2009. The section in the DAISY General Meeting Minutes in which this decision is reported is "9.2 Membership Fees for 2009". The Full Member initial joining fee of USD 30,000 remains unchanged.

Application Process:

The online application for Full Membership is not available. Please contact the President or the Secretary General for additional information about becoming a Full Member or to apply for Full Membership.

 


Associate Membership

Associate Members of the DAISY Consortium are non-profit organisations that produce and/or distribute accessible media for people with print disabilities or may serve the community in other related ways. This latter group includes large educational institutes wishing to participate in the Consortium at this level, associations representing individuals with a print disability, or other service providers. Associate Members share the Full Members' dedication to the worldwide DAISY movement but may serve smaller populations or have fewer available resources.  Associate Members in developing countries benefit from the Consortium's graduated membership fee structure which is based on the World Bank classifications (determined by the per capita income of the country).

Who should join DAISY as an Associate Member:

  • smaller libraries and organisations which are committed to the Mission and Vision of the DAISY Consortium
  • organisations wishing to help shape the direction of DAISY Consortium
  • organisations which want to participate in DAISY Consortium working groups and technical developments (to the level financially feasible in their organisation)
  • libraries and organisations which do not have the financial resources to commit to Full Membership
  • universities and colleges, and accessible materials development centres, especially those providing materials to multiple campuses
  • libraries and organisations wishing to learn more about the DAISY Consortium with a goal of potentially committing to Full Membership

Associate Members may join at any time during a calendar year.  The President will decide as to the admission of Associate Members. See the DAISY Consortium Articles of Association for details. 

Fees for Associate Members - calculated on the World Bank Classification of the per capita income of the country in which the organisation is located.

  • Annual fee: USD 2,625 for the countries classified as “high income”: USD 2,625 (= full fee).
  • Annual fee: USD 1,575 (60% of the full fee) for the countries classified as “upper middle income”
  • Annual fee: USD 787.50 (30% of the full fee) for the countries classified as “lower middle income”
  • Annual fee: USD 393.75 (15% of the full fee) for the countries classified as “low income”

Note: The first year of fees are invoiced pro rata. For instance, when submitting the application in April, the pro rata invoice will cover the period going from May to December.

2009 Membership Fee Change: at the 2008 DAISY Annual General Meeting a fee increase of 5% was proposed and the resolution was adopted. The section in the DAISY General Meeting Minutes in which this decision is reported is "9.2 Membership Fees for 2009". The Consortium's graduated associate membership fee structure which is based on the World Bank classifications remains in place for organizations in developing countries. The graduated annual fee rates for Associate Members in 2009 will be as follows:

  • “high income” (full fee): USD 2,755
  • “upper middle income”, 60% of the full fee: USD 1,650
  • “lower middle income”, 30% of the full fee: USD 825
  • “low income”, 15% of the full fee: USD 415

Friends of the DAISY Consortium

Friends of the DAISY Consortium are grouped into 3 sub-categories of membership:

Friends may join at any time during a calendar year and fees are determined as below for each sub-category. See the DAISY Consortium Regulations for Friends for details.


Friends: Developers

Developers are companies that develop, manufacture, and/or distribute products and services which support and advance the implementation of the DAISY Standard.

Who should consider joining DAISY in the Friends: Developer category:

  • companies selling products and services to DAISY Members, publishers, educators, and end users of DAISY reading systems
  • companies creating DAISY and related production tools
  • companies creating DAISY playback and reading systems
  • companies providing distribution services
  • companies providing content conversion services

Annual Fees for Friends: Developers - USD 2,625

Note: The first year of fees are invoiced pro rata. For instance, when submitting the application in September of a year the pro rata invoice will cover the period going from October to December of this year.

Friends: Publishers, Educators, and Advocates

Publishers, Educators, and Advocates of the DAISY Consortium drive the DAISY movement forward through any combination of providing accessibility services, promoting  and/or utilizing the DAISY Standard and technologies.

Who should join DAISY in the Friends: Publishers, Educators, and Advocates category:

  • mainstream print publishers
  • audio publishers
  • multimedia publishers
  • educational organisations, universities and colleges
  • culture and arts organisations
  • non-profit associations concerned with accessibility, literacy, support or provision of services to individuals unable to read standard print
  • emergency preparedness and evacuation information agencies
  • health organisations
  • distance learning centres and organisations
  • governmental information agencies

Annual Fees for Friends: Publishers, Educators, and Advocates - USD 1,000

Note: The fees are fully invoiced independent from the date of entry of the member.

No increase will be applied to Publishers, Educators, and Advocates membership fees in 2009.

Friends: Individual Supporters

Individual Supporters believe in the Mission and Vision of the DAISY Consortium; they understand the need for accessible reading materials for those who are unable to read standard print publications and advocate for DAISY as "the Best Way to Read and the Best Way to Publish."

Who should join DAISY in the Friends: Individual Supporters category

  • independent open source developers
  • individual content producers
  • individual educators
  • independent consultants
  • independent service providers
  • individuals who believe in universal accessibility of the published materials
  • end-users of accessible published materials

Annual Fees for Friends: Individual Supporters - USD 150

Note: The fees are fully invoiced independent from the date of entry of the member.

No increase will be applied to Individual Supporter membership fees in 2009.
