The text variant of the emph element

The emph element represents an author's emphasis.

Emphasis is not restricted to italicized text, but may constitute any of a variety of typographical or styling means used to distinguish text, such as bolding, underlining, coloring, etc.

Nested emph elements indicate extra emphasized segments within an emphasized segment.

Note that in addition to restrictions presented in the content model above, use of this element must also respect the following requirement:
  • The emph element must neither be empty nor contain only whitespace.
Such requirements take precedence over any conflicting statements in the content model or in the lists above of allowed children and parents.
