The Hong Kong Society for the Blind was founded in 1956 and has become the principal, government subsidised, voluntary organisation in Hong Kong that provides comprehensive services for the blind and visually impaired population. With a staff of over 600, the Society provides rehabilitation, braille and talking book production, library, adaptive technology, children, elderly, opthalmology, career support and development and environmental access consultancy services. The Information Accessibility Centre aims to provide library services to meet the needs of visually impaired users for knowledge, information, lifelong learning support, continuous education and profitable use of leisure time. Its studio produces talking books and periodicals. The Society joined the DAISY Consortium as an Associate Member in 1998.
