Training Trainers in Accessible Format Production
Access to information provides the key to education, inclusion and employment. Modern publishing practices and accessible digital format have the potential to unlock a world of opportunities, and this is especially true in lower and middle income countries.
Through a suite of free tools to create, convert, publish and read documents the building blocks are available. However, training to use these tools create and use accessible formats is often a limiting factor.
Thanks to financial support from Taylor & Francis, DAISY were able to implement a strategy of delivering training to trainers, each of whom would then be able to repeat the training in their countries and regions thereby disseminating the best practices for widest possible impact. The support from Taylor & Francis enabled training of trainers from Sri Lanka, Lesotho, Kenya, India, Morocco and Nepal.
The training covered a broad range of topics including:
- Basic accessibility concepts
- Accessible formats like EPUB and DAISY
- Reading tools
- Creating accessible documents using Word
- Structuring and converting Word documents into EPUB and DAISY formats
- Introduction to text-to-speech tools
- Validation and conformance checking
Each of the 5-day courses concluded with completion and presentation of assignments, discussions on more complex topics like DRM, distribution, alternate workflows, and feedback from participants.
Our thanks to Taylor & Francis for making this training possible.
