Preparing DAISY book for playback on simple Vine Players

Vine players are economical and simple solar-powered audio book players from Solar Grove Solutions. See the article Vine Player Overview for more information.

Simple Vine players are devices with navigation only to next or previous chapter. These players have open internal memory. Content can be copied on them using standard USB cable. Vine C1 and Vine C2 players are in this category. They are referred to as “simple Vine players” here.

Audio books or audio file set compatible with Simple Vine players can also be listened on basic feature phone, generic MP3 players or on speakers that supports audio playback from memory card or memory stick.

DAISY audio book can be prepared by you or obtained from any library, such as the Global Books Service or Bookshare. A DAISY book can be converted to MP3 file set with level 1 navigation using DAISY Pipeline app for reading it on simple vine players. Such books will have single MP3 file for every chapter. All these files are stored in a single folder for the book. There can be many books in different folders in the Simple Vine Player.

The name of every folder has to start with a 3-digit number, such as 001, 002, and so on. This number will determine the sequence of playback of the book. Similarly, name of every file inside the book folder must also start with a 3-digit number. This will determine the sequence of playback of the chapter in that audio file.

For example, if there is an English and a History book for grade 6 in the player, there will be 2 folders with following names:

  • 001 English grade 6
  • 002 History grade 6

Similarly, there will be following MP3 files in each folder:

  • 001 Title and front matter
  • 002 table of contents
  • 003 Chapter 1
  • 004 chapter 2
  • And so on

To convert a DAISY book to such folder structure, do the following:

Install and open the free DAISY Pipeline App, the multi-format converter which includes a script to convert DAISY audio books to Vine Player format.

  1. Start the DAISY Pipeline App and wait for the Pipeline engine to start
  2. In “Select a script” select “DAISY 2.02 to navigable MP3 file-set” or “DAISY 2.02 to navigable MP3 file-set”
The DAISY 2.02 to multi level MP3 conversion script configuration screen in DAISY Pipeline app

  3. Click the browse button and select the “.opf” file in case of DAISY 3 and “ncc.html” file in case of DAISY 2.02 inside the DAISY book folder.
  4. In “Folder depth” select “1”.
  5. Run the job by clicking the “Run” button. The job status will be displayed at the top of the window. It could read “Running” and later “Completed” or “Error”. The progress messages are displayed under “Messages” heading. Don’t worry about warnings in the conversion, only errors (hopefully there will be none!).
  6. When the conversion is completed successfully click the “Show results folder” to view the output.
The output will be a folder structure with MP3 audio files arranged in a format suitable for navigation in a Vine player.

Copying book to simple Vine Player

Connect any model of the simple Vine player to the computer using any USB cable. The end of the cable that goes in the Vine player need to be of USB C type. Other end of the cable should match the USB type of the computer.

  1. On the computer, identify the folder that you created with DAISY Pipeline. It is likely to be in the “Documents/DAISY Pipeline results” folder and may have the name – “DAISY to navigable MP3 file-set” followed by the date and time of its creation. Open this folder.
  2. Go inside folder “MP3 files”. You can also reach this folder directly from the DAISY Pipeline app by choosing to “Go to book folder”.
  3. Here you will find a folder with the name “001”.
  4. This folder needs to be copied to the internal memory or the SD card of the Vine Player.
  5. If this is the first book being added to the Vine player, then you can leave the folder name as “001”. You can also add name of the book after the 3 digit serial number in the folder name. For example, you could rename “001” to “001 English literature for class 6”.
  6. If you already have other books on the Vine Player, then rename “001” to appropriate serial number. For example, if you already have 3 books in the Vine Player, the rename “001” to “004” before copying the folder on Vine player.
