Math Accessibility
Background
Mathematics and STEM content present some of the toughest accessibility challenges in digital publishing. Equations, symbols, graphs and diagrams are often locked into images, proprietary solutions or formats that are unreadable by screen readers, unusable with braille displays, and impossible to navigate for people who are blind, have low vision, or have other print disabilities. Without good solutions, students and professionals working with math and STEM are shut out of full participation in education and work.
Objective
The Math Accessibility group brings people together to improve access to reading and writing mathematics in digital publications and platforms, across any format, on any digital device, in any language, for people with print disabilities.
Activities
The group meets online every couple of months to share knowledge, coordinate efforts, and track progress across the accessible math community. Within the group, smaller working groups take on specific activities, digging into particular problems, technologies or deliverables in more depth.
Participating
Membership is open to anyone concerned with access to math and STEM for people with disabilities, including publishers, educators, developers, researchers, assistive technology specialists, and people with lived experience.
